In 2024, Scott has been delivering an unforgettable season, proving herself as one of the most skilled and determined liberos in the US. Her unmatched defensive prowess, quick reflexes, and leadership on the court have set her apart, earning her respect and admiration from fans, coaches, and analysts alike. As a senior, Scott has truly come into her own, balancing her academic path with an exceptional level of athletic achievement that’s making headlines across the country.
Dominant Defensive Stats
Scott’s stats in 2024 reflect her elite defensive abilities. She’s averaging an impressive 4.98 digs per set, which has placed her among the best liberos nationwide and brought her season total to 204 digs as of mid-season. She has become the third Cardinal to record 1,500 career digs, and she has shown no signs of slowing down! This consistency has been instrumental in Louisville’s success against top-ranked teams, including a two-match sweep over No. 3 Stanford, where Scott logged 39 digs and earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the third time this season.

Scott’s impact hasn’t gone unnoticed. This season, she was named the AVCA/GameChanger National Player of the Week, a prestigious honor rarely awarded to liberos, underlining her critical role on the court. She was also selected as the top libero for NCAA.com’s East All-Star team by Michella Chester, an honor that reflects her position among the nation’s elite defenders. Scott’s stellar performance has also placed her on the inaugural Division I Player of the Year Award Watch List, making her one of the few liberos to receive this level of recognition.
Record-Breaking Appearances
Elena has made her mark in some of the season’s biggest games. Her performance against No. 5 Nebraska was a standout moment, drawing a record-breaking crowd of 14,126 fans at Louisville’s KFC Yum! Center, the highest attendance in the program’s history. Although Louisville didn’t win that match, Scott’s 19 digs in front of a national audience on ABC demonstrated her ability to shine under pressure. This game, which peaked at 808,000 viewers, showcased her talent to a broad audience and further established her as one of the most impactful liberos in the sport.
Head coach Dani Busboom Kelly is proud of her development: “Elena’s a phenomenal player, and we are lucky that she chose to take a leap of faith and switch positions. To excel as one of the best liberos in the country is amazing, and she’s at another level as a senior.” But despite her fierce competitive spirit, Elena Scott remains humble: “It’s my job!”
Elena Scott’s Unstoppable 2023 Season
Elena Scott’s 2023 season was a game-changer! She snagged First Team All-ACC, All-Pitt Region, All-East Region, and earned a spot as an AVCA Second-Team All-American. Named ACC Defensive Player of the Year, she also racked up four ACC Defensive Player of the Week awards, proving her dominance on the court.
Playing every one of Louisville’s 117 sets, Scott put up jaw-dropping stats: 523 digs, a team-high 35 aces, and 130 assists. She hit the 1,000-dig milestone, finishing the year with 1,352 career digs, 6th all-time at Louisville. She recorded double-digit digs in 29 matches, with highs like 29 digs vs. NC State and 27 vs. Creighton. Her serves were just as fierce, with aces in 25 matches, topping out with three in the regional final against Pitt.
Scott’s setting skills came in clutch too, thanks to her high school experience, adding assists in every game. To top it off, she also made the All-ACC Academic Squad. She’s all about excellence on and off the court!
Another Epic Year for Elena Scott in 2022
In 2022, Elena Scott delivered an outstanding season, earning AVCA Second-Team All-American, AVCA East Region First-Team, and All-ACC First-Team honors. Playing in all of Louisville’s 119 sets, she led her team with 467 digs, along with 126 assists and 41 aces. Known for her defensive grit, Elena posted six matches with 20+ digs, including standout performances like 26 against Georgia Tech, 22 against Purdue, and a season-best 28 in the NCAA Semifinal against Pitt.
Her NCAA Tournament stats were equally impressive: she recorded 20 assists, 14 aces, and 95 digs across six matches, including five aces, eight assists, and 28 digs in a high-stakes showdown with Pitt. Her tournament run wrapped up with another strong showing in the final match against Texas, where she added three assists, an ace, and six digs. Elena’s 2022 season was all about consistency and clutch performances.
Elena Scott’s Impressive Freshman Year in 2021
In her debut season, Elena Scott collected a range of honors, including AVCA First Team All-East Region, Second Team All-ACC, and ACC All-Freshman, plus three ACC Freshman of the Week titles as the only non-outside hitter to earn that recognition. Nearly untouchable on defense, Scott was aced only six times in 417 attempts (just twice in ACC play) and led in digs against every opposing libero in Louisville’s top-25 matchups.
Her serve was just as strong, with a standout 16-point streak against Notre Dame and two nine-point runs against Miami and Clemson. Scott recorded double-digit digs in 24 matches, with a career-high 22 digs in a three-setter against Florida State. She was nationally ranked in total digs (415) and held a top-10 ACC spot for digs and service aces. In the NCAA Tournament, Scott shined with 17 digs against UIC, 19 with an ace versus Georgia Tech, and 13 digs against Wisconsin.
Her excellence extended beyond the court, earning her All-ACC Academic Team honors and an invitation to the U.S. National Team Open Tryouts in 2022, rounding off an unforgettable first year.
Elena Scott’s Impressive High School Career
Before shining at the University of Louisville, Elena Scott was already a standout at Mercy Academy and with PNK club volleyball. Known for her relentless defense, Scott became a four-time AAU All-American from 2014-2019 and led her club teams to top national finishes. Her honors include MVP at the SPVB National Junior Classic 16 Open in 2018, multiple All-Tournament selections, and recognition on the Ultra Ankle JVA Watchlist from 2017-2020.
At Mercy, Scott’s achievements included KHSAA All-State First Team in 2019, Region Six Player of the Year (2019 and 2020), and KHSAA Volleyball Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 2019. She also earned All-American honors from MaxPreps and PrepVolleyball, along with a spot on the AVCA Phenom List from 2017-2019.

Will Koger, Elena Scott’s boyfriend, is a talented right-handed pitcher from Bardstown High School and was named the 2021 Fifth Region Player of the Year. Ranked as Kentucky’s No. 2 pitcher and No. 3 overall player, he’s also one of the top right-handed pitchers in the country. Will chose to play for the University of Louisville, turning down offers from big programs like Kentucky and Florida.
